Headaches With the Weight Loss Surgery High Protein Diet

Why do we suffer from headaches when we transition from a high-processed carbohydrate diet to a high protein diet? Many weight loss surgery patients are asking this.

There are, actually, several reasons for headaches when abiding a high protein, low carb diet. More importantly, there are several little things we can do to relieve the headaches:

First, when we transition from a processed carbohydrate diet to one rich in protein as advised by most weight loss surgery (bariatric) doctors and dieticians we increase our intake of tryptophan. A short list of foods high in tryptophan includes cheese, meat, nuts, and soy. Ingestion of tryptophan releases serotonin in the brain, which is considered a vasoconstrictor: it tightens our blood vessels. In modest amounts this helps us feel good; but in greater amounts to which we are not accustomed it causes headaches.

To balance the increased tryptophan (an amino acid - good thing) intake we should include appropriate complex carbohydrates in our weight loss surgery eating rhythm: 2B/1B (2 Bites Protein/1 Bite Carbohydrate). Here are some smart food choices for your weight loss surgery diet::

Change in Routine - Disruption of regular routine (such as change in diet) is known to cause headache.

Dental Problems or Endodontic surgery are known to cause headaches

Sensory Stimuli - sight, smell, and hearing can cause headaches.

Hypoglycemia causes headache.

You need lots of protein because you need to maintain the maximum amount of muscle mass if you wish to lose weight whiles using a treadmill workout.

Once you are following the right treadmill weight loss workout you then need to maintain as much muscle mass as you can. Protein is important because it helps to increase your metabolism and it also helps boost your immune system. Protein is the most important macronutrient because it helps to retain muscle whiles you are performing your treadmill workouts

So how much protein do you need to consume for your treadmill workouts?

You need about half a gram per pound of body weight

So to make sure you recover from your treadmill workouts you need to consume at least.5 grams per pound of body weight. The best sources of protein include fish, eggs and white meats.

And if you can afford it, a good whey protein supplement is also a good way to make sure you get all the protein you need to recover from your treadmill workouts.

So what is the correct proportion of protein to other macronutrients you need in your diet?

The best proportion of protein to carbohydrates you need in your treadmill diet should be around 40% protein. 60% carbohydrates.

This means that if you weight 200 pounds you will need 100 grams of protein a day!

And whiles it is true that consuming lots of protein can harm your kidneys, the treadmill workouts and weight training workouts you perform will make sure all the protein you consume are utilized and burned the right way! You therefore have no reason to fear the effects of protein on the body!

Whey protein supplements have been around for many years now, originally classed as bodybuilding supplements. More recently whey protein supplements have been classed as sports supplements and over the last couple of years, whey protein has been receiving a lot of positive press about how it can boost the immune system and help weight loss or support lean muscle growth resulting in weight gain. Your body weight is controlled by your calorie intake, not protein. If you consume a calorific deficit for long enough you will lose weight because you will be using more energy than you are taking in. But, starving yourself slows down your metabolism, leaves you feeling tired and lethargic and also sets off a trigger for your body to go into starvation mode and hold on to as much of your long term energy stores (fat) as possible. This is not good, because even if you can stick to a very low calorie diet and lose weight, you will feel rough and you will end up with a 'skinny fat' appearance. If you want long term, progressive weight loss, with an improved physique, better health and more energy, follow this advice instead:

consume 10 calories per day per pound of body weight spread daily calories over 6 equal meals keep protein high, supplementing meals with whey protein. Each serving of whey protein is only about 100 calories, as it contains very small amounts of carbs and fats. drink 8-10 glasses of water per day OPTIONAL: do some light cardio, four mornings per week on an empty stomach for 40 minutes, followed by a protein shake. This is the best time in terms of your hormone levels for fat-only loss and works well. Use a heart rate monitor, to monitor your effort levels. OPTIONAL: high intensity exercise 2-3 evenings per week, using free weights with 12-15 rep range, using slow controlled reps. This will increase muscle tone, but with low calories you won't get big, just more toned

Weight Gain
For lean muscular weight gain, exactly the same principles apply, but your body needs more calories. Instead of consuming 10 calories per day per pound of body weight, consume 18-20 calories per day per pound of body weight, i.e. 18x if you have a slow metabolism and 20x if you have a fast metabolism. Protein is more critical to success and you should ensure that you consume protein every 2-3 hours, totaling 1.5g of protein per pound of body weight per day.
